About RRI
Our Goals
Through the Reimagining Reporting Initiative, climate foundations and regranters are reimagining the reporting relationship so that together we can:
Learn more quickly and deeply together about how to increase our impact
Free up time and resources by eliminating bespoke requirements in favor of information exchange with greater strategic value
Increase efficiencies by focusing on sharing the right information through the most appropriate channels
Our History
The Reimagining Reporting Initiative (RRI) was launched in 2022 amid growing recognition that the rapid expansion of climate philanthropy had led to burdensome reporting requirements for grantees and regranters.
In 2023, RRI launched an ambitious landscape analysis of climate philanthropy. Our landmark study found that, despite a shared commitment to learning and impact, current reporting practices often get in the way—creating duplication, generating low-value metrics, and missing opportunities for shared learning.
In 2024, RRI began piloting new models to make reporting more useful, equitable, and learning-focused across the climate funding community, including:
Guiding Principles for Climate Philanthropy – shared norms and practices for transparent, efficient, and respectful information exchange.
Shared Reporting – regranters/grantees submit one report to all (or at least most) of their funders.
Collective Learning Conversations – strategic reflection conversations replace traditional written reports.
RRI continues to gather insights from these pilots, share lessons learned, and collaborate with aligned initiatives such as the Climate SMILE. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, this growing community is showing that better reporting can drive deeper impact when pursued collectively.
